How to Calculate Volumetric Weight for an Accurate Shipping Rate

Many shippers are surprised when the final charge exceeds their estimate. The reason is usually the same: the rate is based on volumetric weight rather than scale weight.

The formula is straightforward. Multiply the length, width, and height in centimetres, then divide by 6,000 for air cargo or 4,000 for land cargo. Compare the result with the actual weight; the higher figure is used.

Mattresses, styrofoam, and hollow items are commonly charged by volumetric weight because they occupy far more space than their weight suggests. Repacking them more compactly can significantly reduce the shipping cost.
